Dental Crowns: Restore Broken, Decayed, or Missing Teeth

For patients with badly broken, decayed, or missing teeth, Drs. Amy Creech-Gionis and Lennie Stern can provide custom dental crowns. Our office in Tampa, FL, uses advanced techniques and state-of-the-art imaging to create crowns that feel comfortable and blend in seamlessly with your smile. Crowns are both aesthetic and functional and are created using lifelike, durable porcelain or zirconia. Along with traditional crowns, Dr. Creech-Gionis can place and restore implant-supported crowns from start to finish. With proper care and regular visits to our office, you can enjoy the benefits of dental crowns for up to 10 years or more.

Uses for a Dental Crown

Dental crowns are an impressive restorative option because they can restore form and function to your smile all at once. In general, a crown can help address:

  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Weakened teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Restoration after a root canal
  • Broken teeth
  • Missing teeth

Made of porcelain or zirconia, dental crowns are highly lifelike and made to reflect the color and translucency of your natural teeth. Thanks to advances in dental porcelain, your crowns can last up to 10 years with proper care and regular visits to your dentist.

Receiving a Crown

During your initial consultation, we will evaluate your oral health and address issues such as gum disease or decay to ensure that your crown has a healthy foundation. When planning your treatment, Drs. Creech-Gionis and Stern will perform an advanced cone beam scan to create accurate, digital impressions instead of using traditional putty impressions. This scan is performed efficiently and allows us to generate thousands of high-resolution images without discomfort to you. This technology also allows our doctors to evaluate your endodontic health and the quality of your jawbone to address bone loss early on. Our studies have shown that crowns created using computer-tomography images fit you much better than crowns created using traditional impressions.

Implant-supported dental crowns are considered a superior tooth replacement solution because they also offer significant oral health benefits.

In order to fit your new crown, we will resize your surrounding tooth structures. We will then thoroughly evaluate your bite and alignment to ensure that the crown fits comfortably before securing it in place using dental cement. To maximize the cosmetic effect of your crown, we will polish the crown until the texture closely matches your surrounding teeth.

Once all decay has been eradicated, your tooth will be reshaped to accommodate a dental crown.

Implant-Supported Crowns

Patients needing to replace missing teeth may want to consider the benefits of an implant-supported crown. These restorations are supported by dental implants. While traditional crowns can usually be placed within two appointments, implant-supported crowns will be placed approximately six months after you receive your implant posts. However, dental implants are considered a superior tooth replacement solution because they also offer significant oral health benefits. After your dental implant surgery, the titanium posts will fuse with your surrounding jawbone over a period of three to six months. Once your implants have fused, Dr. Creech-Gionis will place your abutment and permanent custom crown in place to allow you to chew, speak, and smile properly once more. In addition to their superior aesthetics, dental implants can stimulate the jawbone and prevent further changes in your facial structure.
